LETTER TO NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES II

Salam,

I write again to express concerns over news of unauthorised persons committing murder in the guise of expelling terrorists from the North-East of Nigeria.

Initially, the reports were of the so-called civilian Joint Task Force ~JTF killing persons labelled as Boko Haram.

In recent weeks, similar actions have been attributed to hunters.

I am concerned that criminals exploit the insecurity in the region to eliminate opponents.

You ought to be aware the North in general is marked by ethnocentric violence.

Are Nigerians being labelled as Boko Haram as a pretext to silence them?

The likelihood of that is very prominent.

From personal experience, I am acquainted with the ease with which Hausa-Fulani police officers, judiciary and prison wardens can conspire to deprive a citizen of rights by labelling the individual as Boko Haram.

As persons of a particular ethnicity can abuse their authority as a function of the government, how else mere civilians who cannot be identified and traced.

I ask that security agencies prohibit civilians from murder of any citizen.

I urge respective Police Commissioners of the affected states – Borno, Adamawa, Yobe plus Bauchi and Gombe – to authorise an investigation through the State Criminal Investigation Department to ascertain that innocent Nigerians have not been massacred.

The one and only,
Umm Sulaim
