Thoughts Lead To Appreciation
For long-term preventive strategy, fruitbats ought to be culled.
Fruitbats need to be trapped or poisoned and incinerated.
Care must be exercised to only handle the bats wearing thick gloves *.
For added safety, after wearing gloves use a polythene bag to pick the dead fruitbats.
Alternatively, burn the bats on the spot where they fell.
As fruitbats are natural reservoirs of Ebola virus, we certainly do not want resident reservoirs in Nigeria.
The culling of fruitbats should continue for a long while, I propose a whole year, after infection and transmission in humans have ceased.
Let us make this the very last outbreak in our nation.
I wish to add that while the announcements of committees on Ebola by Northern governments is praiseworthy, it is the behaviours of residents that will determine the success in limiting the spread of the virus.
For that reason, Northern politicians, leaders, Imams, doctors, lecturers, teachers, parents, and administrators of public and private enterprises need to continuously address the people on the modes of precaution.
This should be conducted not just in official settings, but also in private discourse.
Should anyone, especially the educated, express cynicism even in private conversations concerning the veracity of Ebola infection, the people will follow that trend.
I appreciate Imams who on Friday responded to my call to use Jumu’ah gatherings to educate Muslims on Ebola.
Let us keep Nigeria Ebola free.
*Not medical gloves, but heavy-duty gloves, the type worn by manual workers.
